Elena Dondina - MuBA | Children Museum

The association MuBA was founded in Milan in 1995, it is a group of people who have decided to unite in order to create something new, to spread a diverging message in the cultural landscape of Milan of those years: even children need their own space for culture, a customised museum, a place that is not a school or a playground but somewhere where they can learn through experience, exercise their curiosity and develop creative thinking.

Elena is part of this group of people, she is the Founding Partner, a Member of the Board and of the Executive Committee since 2007, when MuBA became a Trust, and is the President since 2011.

"The MuBA project is like my third child. I have been following it and helping it grow since the first day of twenty years ago, when a group of people after discovering, during a trip in the United States, the reality that had not reached us here yet consisting in the Children's Museums, gathered around a table in Ripa di Porta Ticinese.”

In 2007 Muba "grew" and becomes the Foundation but the road towards the materialisation for a Children’s Museum in Milan was still long. The people were there, and so was the project but what was missing was the location!

In such a critical moment, a seemingly unlikely encounter took place: the Rotonda della Besana, a famous building seat to important exhibitions, built in 1700 to used for religious and cemetery services by the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan is proposed as a space to build a permanent centre for cultural and creative activities for children and teenagers.

“A tender was opened to everyone. The cost forecast was extremely challenging, and this was the reason no one showed up. So, we took a very courageous decision, all of us, everyone in this very compact group that has been working together for many years, with one scope. We understood that this was our opportunity to have a seat, we have to make it, let's take the risk. We shall participate in the tender and we will find the resources once we win it.”

We won the tender and we started, with minimum investments, of course, but all that is needed to fill the vast and spectacular ambiences of the former Church of San Michele at Nuovi Sepolcri was the voices and colours of the children running around. The old late Baroque walls communicate peacefully with the curious named project preparations: La perla di SultanChildrenshareIl mercato delle storieCaccia alle uovaStampatelle up to the latest Vietato non toccare (from January 22nd to September 15th, 2016).

"Our initiative is characterised by a high level of independence. Rooted in us is the principle of being always consistent with our ideas, on how the project should be made, on what should their basis and content be. We wanted to dedicate a place to children, a place where the non-formal education principles are applied, where it is possible to experiment and play, have fun and learn. Grow up, through experience, freely and aware.

People in Milano is the story of small and large urban cultural ferment realities through the direct experience of the individual players, people who are became part of this by transforming their experience into a small piece of human heritage shared by everyone. People in Milano is a project by Elce, Valentina Di Francesco and Stefano Frattini.
