Transcending the symbolism of harmony in nature in a way only artifice can, surrounded by over 150 straw bales, which make up the “Third Heaven”. The straw bales are arranged specifically in order to symbolize the performance art creating the “Third Paradise”. The term comes from the ancient Persian paradise garden and means “protected”. Humanity has experienced two heavens: the first is where nature completely regulated life on earth. The second is the artificial paradise developed by human intelligence over the centuries, through a process leading mankind to improve their quality of life, but coming into conflict with the natural world. Aesthetically, the apple is a symbol for creation and life. The Third Paradise - The Reinstated Apple was donated by City of Art, Pistoletto’s Foundation. Made specifically for the occasion of Expo Milano 2015, which invites us to reflect on the need to feed the planet in a sustainable way.
"The symbol of the apple is the whole history we have behind us, starting from the bite, which is the separation of mankind from nature and origin of the artificial world as it grew to the size of today's all-encompassing. The apple is reinstated with entry into a new era in which the artificial world and the natural world are reunited producing a new planetary balance", Pistoletto said. “The Third Paradise aims to reconcile different polarities as nature and artifice and can only be realized through the assumption of collective social responsibility”.
Milano is a place to BE, but we wouldn’t BE here without mother earth. So reduce, reuse and recycle and instead of focusing on the likes of a photo or staring at screens, it’s time to ask ourselves: what good have we done today for the betterment of the earth?
